Dealing With Problems In A Group
Because small groups are made up of human beings, you can't avoid problems. In fact, you do not want to avoid problems. Problems reveal the hidden issues of people's hearts that limit them in their spiritual growth. As a leader you must learn to keep your eyes open for problems. Here are some suggestions to use when a problem arises in your group:
- Pray - When we recognize a problem, our natural instinct is to react by taking action. God wants you to seek Him first and allow Him to work. The first thing you should always do is pray and seek guidance from God. You might sense that God wants you to act, but you might also realize that sometimes you need to wait.
- Look to Scripture - Search the scriptures to see what God's Word has to say about the situation. There are numerous Bible passages that provide a biblical basis for resolving conflict. Here are a few: Matthew 7:5, 12; 18:15-17; Ephesians 4:2-3, 25,29,32; Philippians 2:3-4.
- Talk to a Church Leader - Some problems you will face will be beyond your ability or experience to address. Talk with the person who oversees you.
- Refer - If someone is having a chronic or potentially harmful problem refer them to a pastor. Help them set up an appointment with a pastor and offer to go with them if they desire.
